Extensions are for filing, not paying. If you need more time to file, request an extension—but you still need to pay any taxes owed by the original deadline to avoid penalties.
Estimated payments matter. If you’re self-employed or own a business and don’t have taxes withheld from a paycheck, you’ll need to make quarterly estimated payments. Missing them can result in underpayment penalties.
State deadlines may vary. Most states follow federal deadlines, but not all. Check your state’s requirements.
Weekend/holiday adjustments. When a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it’s typically moved to the next business day.
